Finding My Way Back: A Journey Through Anxiety

Shared by someone aged 15-18 from NT
Posted on 11 July 2025

Anxiety used to be the oppressive ruler of my life, dictating my every move and thought. Panic attacks, like sudden, violent storms, would strike out of nowhere, leaving me gasping for air, heart pounding, and utterly terrified. The simplest of daily tasks, like going to the grocery store or answering the phone, felt like climbing Mount Everest without oxygen.

For a long time, I felt like a prisoner in my own mind, constantly on edge, anticipating the next wave of fear. But I learned that knowledge is power. I started diligently working with a therapist to identify my triggers – the specific situations, thoughts, or sensations that would precede an attack. This awareness was the first crucial step.

Slowly but surely, I began to develop coping mechanisms: deep breathing exercises, grounding techniques, and challenging my irrational thoughts. It's an ongoing journey, a continuous practice of self-awareness and gentle redirection. There are still challenging days, but with each strategy I master, with each step forward, no matter how small, I reclaim a little more of myself from the grip of anxiety. It's a testament to resilience, and I'm proud of the progress I've made.
