Navigating Family Violence: Finding Strength and Safety

Shared by someone aged 19-25 from NT
Posted on 11 July 2025

Growing up in a home where family violence was a constant presence left deep, insidious scars that weren't immediately visible. The fear, the tension, and the unpredictability created an environment where I was always on guard, always trying to make myself small and invisible. It took years, and a lot of painful introspection, to fully understand the profound and lasting impact that environment had on my development, my sense of self, and my ability to trust.

Breaking free was incredibly difficult, not just physically, but emotionally and psychologically. The conditioning of such an upbringing makes leaving feel like an act of betrayal, even when it's necessary for survival. But I found the courage, little by little, to seek help and create a plan for safety. Support services, though initially daunting, became my refuge and my guide.

Healing from family violence is a long, non-linear process. There are still days when the past casts a shadow, but I am fiercely committed to creating a life of safety, peace, and emotional well-being for myself. I am learning to trust my instincts, set firm boundaries, and nurture the healthy relationships that bring genuine connection and calm into my world. My journey is a testament to the human spirit's capacity for resilience.
