Parenting with a Mental Illness: Finding Balance and Openness
Being a parent while simultaneously managing a mental illness presents a unique and often overwhelming set of challenges. Some days, it feels like an impossible balancing act – trying to be present and nurturing for my children while battling my own internal struggles. The guilt can be immense, the fear of passing on my struggles, or not being 'enough' for them, is a constant worry.

Yet, paradoxically, my children are also my greatest motivation. Their innocence, their need for my presence, pushes me to seek treatment, to practice self-care, and to keep fighting for my own well-being. They inspire me to be resilient, even on the hardest days.
I've made a conscious choice to be open and honest with them, in age-appropriate ways, about my mental health. It's not always easy, but I believe it teaches them empathy, resilience, and the importance of self-care. It also normalizes mental health challenges, showing them that it's okay not to be okay, and that seeking help is a sign of strength. We're navigating this journey together, learning and growing as a family.
