Living with OCD: Challenging the Compulsions and Finding Freedom

Shared by someone aged 15-18 from NT

OCD, or Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, felt like a cruel and relentless master, dictating my every move with its relentless barrage of intrusive thoughts and mandatory compulsions. My mind would latch onto irrational fears or anxieties, creating a powerful urge to perform specific rituals – checking, counting, washing, arranging – in an attempt to alleviate the distress. These rituals were exhausting, time-consuming, and utterly irrational, yet the anxiety of not performing them was even greater.

I spent countless hours trapped in these cycles, my life shrinking as the demands of my OCD grew. The shame and secrecy I felt were immense, leading to further isolation. I desperately wanted to break free from its grip, but the fear of the unknown, of what might happen if I didn't perform a compulsion, was paralysing.

It took a lot of courage and specialised exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy to challenge its hold. This therapy, though incredibly uncomfortable at times, taught me to gradually confront my fears without engaging in my compulsions. Every small victory, every urge resisted, every ritual not performed, is a monumental step towards freedom and reclaiming my life from the relentless demands of OCD. It's a continuous process of challenging my mind and building resilience.
